One principle before any tool
Gambling is paid entertainment. It has a cost, like a cinema ticket, and sometimes it hands some of that cost back — but across time the house edge means the arrow points one way. Nothing on this site, and nothing anywhere honest, will present gambling as income. Decide what a session is worth to you as entertainment, and the tools below exist to hold that line for you.
The tools, in escalating order
Deposit limits
Every UKGC-licensed casino must offer them — daily, weekly or monthly caps set in your account settings. Lowering a limit takes effect immediately; raising one is deliberately delayed, usually by 24 hours, so a hot-headed moment can't undo a calm decision. Set one on day one, while you're indifferent.
Time-outs
A short break — typically 24 hours to six weeks — during which the account locks and marketing stops. Useful when play has drifted from planned to habitual and you want distance without a long commitment.
Self-exclusion and GamStop
Excluding from a single site is available everywhere, but GamStop is the stronger instrument: one free registration blocks every UK-licensed gambling site for six months, one year or five years. It cannot be reversed early, which is exactly the point. Banks add another layer — most major UK banks now offer a gambling block on cards, switched on from the banking app.
Warning signs worth taking seriously
- Chasing — returning specifically to win back yesterday's losses rather than to play.
- Spending money that had a job: rent, bills, the food budget.
- Hiding sessions or amounts from people close to you.
- Gambling to escape a mood rather than for entertainment.
- Feeling restless or irritable on days without a bet.
Two or more of these, honestly recognised, is the moment to use a tool from the list above — or to make a phone call from the list below. Not a crisis threshold. Just the sensible moment.
